45 jaar geleden gaf ik in De Voorpost bij het begin van het nieuwe decennium (“tachtig wordt prachtig”) net als zowat iedereen een overzicht van de popmuziek in de jaren zeventig. Wel, op het einde van 1982 vroeg Jacky Huys me om een top tien voor De Morgen, de krant waarvoor hij in die tijd werkte. Dat heb ik dan ook braaf gedaan en ik neem ze hier letterlijk over, ook al weerspiegelt ze niet meer mijn huidige smaak. Ook voor 1980 en 1981 die ik dus achteraf nog moest aanvullen, heb ik mij gebaseerd op mijn jaaroverzicht in De Rode Vaan.

Euh, niets uiteraard. In 1969 zou “Led Zeppelin II” waarschijnlijk bovenaan hebben gestaan. Maar hoever zaten ze al in 1971? “Led Zeppelin IV”? En wat staat daar dan op? “Stairway to heaven”? Enfin, de conclusie is dat je elpees gewoon nummeren géén goed idee is. Vraag dat maar aan Will Tura ;-)

Led Zeppelin IV, heeft GEEN naam. Ze draagt dus ook niet het nummer IV. Het leverde hen voornamelijk heibel op met Atlantic. Ze wordt door quasi iedereen beschouwd als de beste Zep LP. Page weigerde bovendien ook het uitbrengen van singelwerk. Mogelijks een reden dat ze wat aan jou is voorbijgegaan. Rock ‘n’ Roll, Black dog, Stairway, When the Levee breaks van Memphis Minnie, The battle of evermore, en tot slot Going to California en Misty Mountain Hop. En zoals bij The Beatles staat er ook Four sticks op, de zogenaamde Ringo track.
Dit om even te zeggen, wat er ‘op staat.’
