Een verfrissing bij deze helse temperaturen: de Amerikaans-Australische actrice Nicole Kidman viert vandaag haar 55ste verjaardag.
Nicole Mary Kidman werd geboren in Honolulu. Ze woonde in de VS tot haar vierde, daarna verhuisde ze met haar ouders naar Australië. Toen ze drie was, begon ze met balletles. Op veertienjarige leeftijd startte haar carrière met een rol in de kerstfilm Bush Christmas.
Op de set van Days of Thunder, haar eerste Amerikaanse film, begon ze een relatie met Tom Cruise. De twee trouwden op 25 december 1990. In “To die for” (Gus Van Sant, 1995) gaat Kidman letterlijk over lijken om van Sabine Hagedoren op te klimmen tot Christina von Wackerbarth, maar toch kan ik haar met haar Marina Wally-look moeilijk tot een femme fatale rekenen.
Ook in “The Peacemaker” van Mimi Leder uit 1995 ziet ze er nog uit als een middelbare scholiere. Nochtans spelen zij en George Clooney hierin a US Army colonel and a civilian woman supervising him who must track down stolen Russian nuclear weapons before they’re used by terrorists.
Nicole Kidman bereikte de status van modern icoon met “Eyes wide shut” van Stanley Kubrick uit 1999 en “Moulin Rouge” van Baz Luhrmann uit 2001.
Datzelfde jaar was ze ook in een kleinere film te zien, “Birthday girl” van Jez Butterworth. Voor drie vierden is deze film een stevige waarschuwing voor de zielepoten die via het internet een bruid uit het buitenland, meer bepaald uit Rusland, menen te moeten zoeken. Waarom er dan zo nodig een happy end aan dient te worden gebreid, is iets dat me compleet ontgaat. Nicole zelf is overigens het beste in het eerste deel, als ze doet alsof ze geen Engels verstaat. Gedurende haar huwelijk met Cruise adopteerde het paar twee kinderen: een dochter en een zoon. In 2001 kwam echter de scheiding, naar algemeen wordt aangenomen, omdat zij haar kinderen katholiek wenste op te voeden en niet onder de invloed van de door Tom Cruise aangehangen Scientologykerk. Na de scheiding begon Kidman een relatie met Lenny Kravitz.
Kidman won een Oscar voor beste vrouwelijke hoofdrol voor de verfilming van Michael Cunninghams roman The Hours in 2003. Nicole Kidman zet de gecompliceerde aard van Virginia Woolf op fantastische wijze neer.
In 2006 begon ze een relatie met countryzanger Keith Urban. In juni 2006 trouwden ze, waarna ze aan de verfilming van “Australia” door Baz Luhrmann begon. Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhrmann agreed not to work together again after this film because their collaborations always collided with strong personal experiences. Kidman en haar echtgenoot Keith Urban kregen op 7 juli 2008 dus hun eerste kind, een dochter. Het meisje kwam ter wereld in Nashville in de staat Tennessee. Op 28 december 2010 werd hun tweede dochter geboren via een draagmoeder.

A year later Nicole Kidman’s agent originally considered rejecting the part of Millicent in “Paddington” (Paul King), before passing it on to Kidman herself. The agent casually mentioned the offer, thinking Kidman would turn it down immediately. However, to her surprise, she was met by an enthusiastic reaction from Kidman, who was eager to star in the film, as she is a childhood fan of Michael Bond’s books. Her childhood wish was to have Paddington Bear live at her home. She said that to participate in this film was the closest she would ever come to realize it. This was also the first time Nicole Kidman did a family-friendly film following the birth of her two children with Keith Urban. Which meant that this would be the first time her two children would be able to see their mother in action. According to Kidman, her children were very excited about the project at first, since they thought she would play “the bear’s mommy”. However, when they discovered she was going to play the villain to the bear, they were left mortified. This was eventually the second time Nicole Kidman played a villain in an adaptation of a British children’s book that features a talking bear as one of the main characters. She previously did in The Golden Compass (2007).
“Secret in their eyes” (2015) was the first collaboration between Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman. Both actresses have been working since the 1980’s, both won their Academy Award in the early 00’s, and both have been among the highest paid actresses in the movie industry. According to the director ‘Billy Ray’ there was a healthy working relationship between the two: “There was enormous respect, great camaraderie, and, in my opinion – I don’t know if either of them would ever admit to it – there was a very healthy, kind of athletic level of competitiveness. They both had such regard for each other and they both wanted to do their best because the other was in the movie.”
The biggest differences between El secreto de sus ojos (2009) and this American remake are the setting and era (Argentina during the military dictatorship vs. the USA post-9/11). Other major differences include: the Argentinian version concerns a widowed husband unknown to the main character instead of a bereaved mother and colleague of the protagonist. 25 years have passed between the two timeframes instead of 13. The killer is released because he is drafted into a government-supported security agency, taking his revenge by killing the main character’s colleague; in the American version, he receives secret protection from the justice department because he is an important police informant. Unlike the Argentine version, he is finally killed at the end.
In 2014 speelde Kidman de hoofdrol in de thriller “Before I go to sleep” (naast Colin Firth), maar vooral ook de titelrol in “Grace of Monaco” van Olivier Dahan. Nicole Kidman has stated – zeer terecht – that the movie is not a documentary, nor a biopic. Instead, it is the research of Grace Kelly’s vulnerability and humanity. In January 2013, more than a year before the release of the film, Grace Kelly’s children Prince Albert, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie of Monaco, issued a joint statement saying they had no association with the production. The family added that the film contains major historical inaccuracies and that director Olivier Dahan ignored their requests for changes. In September 2014, before the film’s release in the US was sorted out, Nicole Kidman admitted in a BBC interview with Simon Mayo that the film, although selected as the opening film at the Cannes Film Festival, had problems: “I did do my best and obviously it didn’t work”. Screenwriter Arash Amel live-tweeted his dislike for the version shown on Lifetime at its US television debut. He has described the film as his ‘film-making Vietnam’. In 2014 bracht schrijfster Jean Hanff Korelitz de psychologische thriller You Should Have Known uit. Vier jaar later raakte bekend dat het boek door HBO zou verfilmd worden, als een samenwerking tussen scenarist David E. Kelley en actrice Nicole Kidman. De twee hadden eerder ook al samengewerkt aan de succesvolle HBO-serie Big Little Lies (2017–2019). Susanne Bier werd in dienst genomen om het project te regisseren. In november 2018 raakte de casting van Hugh Grant en Donald Sutherland bekend. De première van de miniserie was oorspronkelijk gepland voor 10 mei 2020 maar werd vanwege de coronapandemie uitgesteld. De reeks ging uiteindelijk pas op 25 oktober 2020 in première op HBO. The day of the finale, there was an angry outcry on social media from fans when the killer was finally revealed. Many felt it was “lazy writing” and made the series “ultimately pointless.” Time magazine wrote a review saying that the “end didn’t shock viewers so much as insult them.”
Nicole Kidman performs the intro-song, a cover of “Dream a Little Dream of Me”. It was director Susanne Bier’s idea to have her perform it, and Kidman’s husband Keith Urban helped her record the cover. The locker room scene was shot without rehearsals, as director Susanne Bier likes to do, and Nicole Kidman was not even warned that she would be facing Matilda De Angelis in full nude, which wasn’t in the screenplay: “Full nudity was not foreseen, but it was functional to the scene. Ondertussen had Nicole Kidman in 2019 ook al Mrs.Barbour vertolkt in Peter Straughans aanpassing van de roman The Goldfinch uit 2013 van Donna Tartt. Regisseur was de Ier John Crowley. The Goldfinch ging in première op het Toronto International Film Festival 2019 en werd op 13 september 2019 in de bioscoop uitgebracht in de Verenigde Staten door Warner Bros. Pictures. Het werd een box-office-flop , met geschatte verliezen voor de studio van wel $ 50 miljoen, en ontving over het algemeen negatieve recensies waarin kritiek werd geuit op de plot en het verhaal, hoewel de cinematografie en uitvoeringen werden geprezen. Donna Tartt had naar verluidt een hekel aan de aanpassing zodat ze zelfs haar oude agent ontsloeg, en duidelijk maakte dat ze de rechten op haar werk niet meer zou verkopen voor films.
