De Tsjechische bariton Vratislav Kriz (Praag 1958) maakte weinig indruk met een fragment uit “Lucia di Lammermoor” tijdens de BRT wedstrijd 1990. In Cardiff 1991 zong hij een Bijbels lied van Dvorak en de champagne-aria uit “Don Giovanni”. Hij lijkt me meer een oratoriumzanger, maar toch is het in de opera dat hij carrière heeft gemaakt.
Vratislav Kříž is a graduate of the Prague Conservatory. In the years 1987-2010, after four years of working at the State Theatre in Ústí nad Labem, he was engaged as a soloist of Prague’s National Theatre Opera. He has created here a number of distinct world opera roles, among them: Posa (Verdi: Don Carlos), Enrico (Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor), the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Tchaikovsky’s Tomsky (The Queen of Spades) and the title role of Eugene Onegin.
Vratislav Kříž has also performed on international opera stages and concert tours abroad. Since 1997 he has regularly sung in Japan within the National Theatre’s tours (Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro). From 1999 to 2001 he performed at Teatro di Lirico in Cagliari, Sardinia.
