Zestig jaar geleden: The Beatles nemen een nummer van Mikis Theodorakis op

Het is vandaag zestig jaar geleden dat The Beatles zowaar een nummer van Mikis Theodorakis opnamen. Dat gebeurde in de BBC-studios.

Hoewel The Beatles inderdaad het nummer hebben opgenomen, moet worden opgemerkt dat de compositie zelf niet oorspronkelijk van Theodorakis is. “The Honeymoon Song” is eigenlijk gebaseerd op een Griekse melodie genaamd “Dorogoi dlinnoyu” (ook bekend als “Those Were the Days”), gecomponeerd door Boris Fomin in 1925. Theodorakis maakte een arrangement van deze melodie als the theme tune to the 1959 film Luna De Miel (Honeymoon), also shown as The Lovers of Teruel in the United States, en schreef een Engelse tekst voor het nummer (*). Petula Clark nam het in 1960 in het Frans op onder de titel “Lune de miel” en Caterina Valente nam zowaar een Nederlandse versie op (met dank aan Raymond Thielens).

The film by British director-writer Michael Powell, based in part on the ballet El Amor Brujo by Gregorio Martínez Sierra, is something of a travelogue around Spain with dance interludes, set to the repeated theme of The Honeymoon Song. Later werd het dus door The Beatles opgenomen for the BBC radio show Pop Go The Beatles and first broadcast on 6 August. It was released in 1994 on the Live At The BBC album.

Het idee om het nummer op te nemen kwam van Paul McCartney: “The Honeymoon Song was Marino Marini, an Italian and his backing group. They used to appear on telly and the greatest thing about them was they had a volume pedal! The Honeymoon Song wasn’t a big hit but I liked it, thought it was a nice tune. I was the force behind that, the others thought it was a real soppy idea, which I can see now!” (Paul McCartney in The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions van Mark Lewisohn). “Paul McCartney and John Lennon had creative differences, which were pulling the band apart. It was not entirely surprising that John was dismissive of Paul’s idea to record The Honeymoon Song for the BBC Radio show,” Ringo Starr revealed in an interview on American radio in 1977. “They were unable to forge a connection over it.” In 1969, Welsh singer, Mary Hopkin performed a cover version of The Honeymoon Song, produced by Paul McCartney, which was released on her debut album Post Card. Theodorakis and The Beatles have never met, al wil bovenstaande collage door reddit ons het tegendeel doen geloven…

(*) Volgens The Beatles’ Bible, cyprus-mail.com, Wikipedia, kortom alles behalve chatgtp, the English-language lyrics were by William Sansom. Chatgtp flatert ook door te beweren dat het nummer verscheen op hun debuutalbum “Please Please Me” uit 1963. Volgens Wikipedia verscheen het dat jaar ook als single, maar dat lijkt mij eveneens een flater van belang!
