Pierce Brosnan wordt zeventig…

Pierce Brosnan, die in 1995 uitgekozen werd als de nieuwe James Bond voor “Goldeneye” van regisseur Martin Campbell, wordt vandaag zeventig jaar.

Eigenlijk was Brosnan reeds de eerste keus geweest toen men uiteindelijk Timothy Dalton nam, maar toen wilden de makers van de televisieserie “Remington Steele” hem niet laten gaan. Aangezien het de best lopende Bond-film tot dan toe werd, dacht men dat Brosnan nog een tijdje kon doorgaan.
Brosnan zelf vond het blijkbaar zo’n stimulans dat hij eindelijk stopte met rouwen om zijn in 1991 overleden echtgenote Cassandra (*). Hij huwde in december ’95 met de Amerikaanse actrice Keely Shaye-Smith (°1964). Hij heeft uit zijn vorige huwelijk een zoontje, Sean (°1984).
“Aquator” (of “Warhead 2000 A.D.”) zou de 18de Bondfilm worden en de tweede met Pierce Brosnan. Maar dé trekpleister moest opnieuw Sean Connery worden, die deze keer als de Slechte zou optreden. Er waren echter twee “maren”: het prijsticket van Connery lag erg hoog en het was niet zeker dat Brosnan een directe confrontatie wenste met diegene die toch nog altijd als de beste Bond wordt omschreven. De onvermijdelijke Bond-meisjes zouden deze keer Natasha Henstridge (“Species”) en Selma Hayek (“Desperado”) worden. Maar ik zou zeggen: keep on dreaming, want deze film is er nooit gekomen.
Toch kan Brosnan niet ontevreden zijn, want hij mocht ook nog “Tomorrow never dies” (1997), “The world is not enough” (1999) en “Die another day” (2002) op zijn palmares schrijven. In Tomorrow never dies (met Bondmeisjes Teri Hatcher en Michelle Yeoh) zegt Moneypenny op een bepaald moment tegen hem: “You’ve always been a cunning linguist, James!”
The original title of the film was “Tomorrow Never Lies”, which makes more sense when you consider media mogul Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) was creating the next day’s headlines in advance, then causing those events to happen. But a typo on an early script draft was adopted by the producers, and Tomorrow Never Dies was used instead. The pop group Pulp wrote a theme song, which later appeared on the B-side to the group’s single “Help the Aged”, with the title “Tomorrow Never Lies”, but was spurned for Sheryl Crow’s song.
The estimated body count is one hundred ninety-seven, making this the highest death toll in any Bond film. On the other hand, this was the first movie in film history to have its entire budget be covered in product placement campaigns.
Pierce Brosnan later said that production of this film was “like pulling teeth” en zes jaar later voegde hij er in Humo aan toe: “In de jaren tachtig en negentig hadden ze van Bond een politiek correcte kerel gemaakt: hij rookte niet meer, hij dronk niet meer, hij vrijde zelfs niet meer. Belachelijk! (…) Ja, in Die another day had ik een stomende seksscène met Halle Berry, maar die hebben ze achteraf zo moeten inkorten van de filmcommissie dat er haast niks meer van overbleef. Maar hey, het is niet langer mijn probleem: één telefoontje en ik was Bond af. (…) Het deed pijn, ja. Ik had het niet zien aankomen. Een woordje uitleg was fijn geweest.”
Pierce Brosnan and director Brett Ratner were hoping to collaborate on the next James Bond movie, but after that fell through with Bond producers they decided to maintain their relationship and do “After the sunset” instead. “After the Sunset sees Pierce Brosnan play an ex-jewel thief in a simple “will the old pro come out of retirement for one last job” movie that is far more entertaining than its unoriginal premise sounds. Pierce Brosnan takes to his dressed-down James Bond role very well, and the jokes and his style make him a very likable character. Woody Harrelson, the rival FBI agent, puts in a similarly enjoyable performance, and his inept bumblings around the island create some unexpected comic situations between the cop and the thief. It’s the relationship between these two (and the compromising situations they find themselves in) that makes the film, as they antagonize each other and almost become buddies toward the end. Their encounters add something fresh and unexpected to the movie’s simple formula and make it really entertaining.” Het is duidelijk dat Mike Keating op de Internet Movie Database niet erg onder de indruk was van het spel van Salma Hayek in deze film, want hij verlegt het antagonisme tussen Brosnan en Hayek naar dat tussen Brosnan en Harrelson. En heeft hij gelijk? Wel, laten we eens zien wat hij over Salma heeft te vertellen: “As for Salma… let’s just say the directors are aware of what their male audience wants to see.” Ja dus.

Daarna (2005) volgde “The matador” van Richard Shepard, waarin Brosnan een ouder wordende huurmoordenaar speelt.
In 2007 speelt Brosnan de oerslechterik in “Butterfly on a wheel” van Mike Barker. Ik moet er wel aan toevoegen dat er op het einde een verrassende “twist” in het scenario zit aan te komen, maar meer kan ik er niet over vertellen zonder de film te “verraden”. De titel is in zekere zin wel een weggever in die richting, aangezien hij is afgeleid van het Engelse gezegde Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel? uit Alexander Pope’s “Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot” van 1735 (**), wat zoveel betekent als ‘een grootschalige actie ondernemen om een klein effect te bereiken’. Al is het maar te zien wat je “een klein effect” noemt natuurlijk…
In 2009 kreeg Brosnan een raspberrie voor zijn aandeel in de verfilming van de Abba-musical “Mamma mia”. Nochtans vond ik hem wel meevallen in deze film. Bovendien kan ook de film zelf onmogelijk slecht worden genoemd. Dat was ook het geval met “The love punch”, een grand guignole-komedie uit 2013 geschreven en geregisseerd door Joel Hopkins. In this film there at least three allusions to Brosnan’s former role as James Bond. When offered a gun, Brosnan momentarily holds it against his cheek in the iconic 007 pose. Later, when all four heroes are scaling a cliff, the score briefly becomes a faux John Barry action cue. Another obvious Bond wink being of course the martini (shaken not stirred) he enjoys at the beginning of the movie.
Bond is echt niet meer weg te denken uit de carrière van Brosnan. Ook niet als hij in 2014 de hoofdrol speelt in “(The) November man” van Roger Donaldson. Brosnans opvolger Daniel Craig was originally cast to play the main character Peter Devereaux but the director had to recast at the last minute due to Craig’s other commitments. By this point the director was so keen to have a “Bond” play this darker role, he tried to get Sean Connery, but he was too old to run about. Pierce Brosnan heard about this and approached him, saying “he can play it dark”, and would even start drinking again to get himself into character. The director was impressed with his dedication and cast him. Award winning stunt coordinator Mark Mottram, who had previously worked with Pierce Brosnan on three of his Bond films, also served as his stunt double. Pierce Brosnan and director Roger Donaldson previously worked together on “Dante’s Peak” (1997). The pair collaborated on that movie between Brosnan’s Bond films “GoldenEye” (1995) and “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997).
It was executive producer Dino Conte who first put the November Man book series by US author Bill Granger in front of producer Beau St.Clair. Written from the late ’70’s onwards, the thirteen books in series offered a strong, complex and intriguing central protagonist in Peter Devereaux – a man operating within nail bitingly realistic scenarios of the time and surrounded by characters who turns present of the best and worst of human nature in a world of international power broking, deception , trade off and self interest. What’s more the ‘Cold War’ backdrop of Granger’s books could convincingly be updated to reflect the current political climate. En het dient gezegd: in de verfilming van “November Man” is geen enkele allusie terug te vinden op het communistische regime. Ook de traditionele anti-Russische houding wordt een beetje getemperd door het feit dat de CIA er even corrupt uitkomt.
Omdat het het eerste boek uit de serie is dat werd verfilmd, gaf men het de naam van de serie (“November man” dus, omdat als hij gepasseerd is, iedereen “dood” is) mee, maar eigenlijk is dit de verfilming van het zevende boek uit de reeks, “There Are No Spies”.
In 2012 was hij te zien in de Deense film “Den skaldede frisør” van Susanne Bier. Letterlijk vertaald zou dit “De Kale Kapper” zijn (zowaar een album van “Suske en Wiske”), maar in het Engels werd dit dan “Love is all you need”. De Deense titel slaat op het feit dat het hoofdpersonage, kapster Ida (gespeeld door Trine Dyrholm), kaal is door chemotherapie. Pierce Brosnan said he was attracted to the role in part because he was widowed after his first wife, Cassandra Harris, died from ovarian cancer. He did not know any Danish when he was cast. However, the Danish actors, actresses and crew spoke English. Apart from one or two words in Danish, Brosnan’s entire dialogue in the film is in English.
In 2014 speelde Pierce Brosnan de hoofdrol in de Amerikaanse film “Some Kind of Beautiful”, released in Canada with the title, “How to Make Love Like an Englishman”, and released in the UK with the title “Lessons in Love”. Na “After the sunset”, tien jaar eerder, vormde Brosnan opnieuw een paar met Salma Hayek.

In 2016 was hij al duidelijk ouder in “I.T.” van John Moore. Toch moet hij nog een paar keer vechten tegen Jason Berry die zijn leven en dat van zijn vrouw (Karen Moskow) en dochter (Kai Ryssdal) door middel van de nieuwste technologie tot een hel maakt. Het eindresultaat is niet helemaal positief, o.m. door de eindscène die helemaal de mist ingaat. Pierce gave his voice to a “smart house” in a Simpsons episode, with similar setting, only now the tables are turned.

“The Foreigner” (2017) reunited director Martin Campbell with Pierce Brosnan, after working together on GoldenEye (1995). Brosnan’s role of Liam Hennessy is based on Northern Irish politicians Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness. Adams was actively involved in the Irish Republican movement, although he denies having been a member of the I.R.A. (a claim contested by many). He later became the leader of Sinn Féin, the political branch of the I.R.A., and was heavily involved in establishing a lasting peace accord in Northern Ireland. Hennessy even shows physical resemblance to Adams (short gray hair, full beard, glasses). Adams was never Deputy First Minister for Northern Ireland. That position was filled by Martin McGuinness. In this movie, Hennessey describes a previous nickname, “Butcher of the Bogside” when referring to his terrorist past. Martin McGuinness was known as “Butcher of the Bogside”.

(*) Cassandra was, net als haar moeder, gestorven aan eierstokkanker. Als klap op de vuurpijl zou eind juni 2013 ook Brosnans dochter (en dus ook de dochter van Cassandra) Charlotte op 41-jarige leeftijd aan precies dezelfde ziekte sterven. Als dat niet genetisch bepaald is, dan weet ik het ook niet meer!
(**) De uitspraak werd vooral gemeengoed nadat William Rees-Mogg, as editor of The Times newspaper, het had gebruikt as the heading (set in capital letters) for an editorial on 1 July 1967 about the “Redlands” court case, which had resulted in prison sentences for Rolling Stones members Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. Vandaar dat nadien tal van variations of the phrase also appear in pop music. The Mission recorded a track titled “Butterfly on a Wheel” for their album Carved in Sand changing the quote slightly to “Love breaks the wings of a butterfly on a wheel.” The hard rock song “Soul Asylum” from The Cult’s Sonic Temple album opens with the line “Who would break a butterfly on a wheel?”. Coldplay rephrased the quote as “The wheel breaks the butterfly” in their 2011 single “Paradise.” Oasis also made a reference to the line with the lyric “Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly”, in their song “Falling Down”. In 2013, the Scottish band Biffy Clyro released a b-side entitled “Break A Butterfly On A Wheel”, an obvious reference to the quote, on their single for Victory Over The Sun. (Wikipedia)
