55 jaar geleden: Bobby Goldsboro neemt “Honey” op

Het is vandaag precies 55 jaar geleden dat Bobby Goldsboro zijn grootste hit opnam: “Honey”. Alhoewel het een smartlap van het zuiverste water is, heb ik er toch een soft spot voor omdat het nummer voor mij onlosmakelijk verbonden is aan mijn eerste liefje. Alhoewel Bobby Goldsboro zelf een singer/songwriter was, is zijn grootste hit dus geschreven door iemand anders. Dat kan songwriters soms zuur opbreken (denk in ons eigen landje aan Jan De Wilde die zijn grootste successen te danken heeft aan Lieven Tavernier).
This single about the loss of a loved one hit No.1 the week after Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis and stayed there for five weeks. Further, the Hot 100 top 10 run of “Honey” began the week of the King assassination and ended the week of the assassination of Robert Kennedy. No other Hot 100 entry had a top 10 run that spanned that same time interval.
