Matthias Schoenaerts wordt 45…

De Antwerpse acteur Matthias Schoenaerts viert vandaag zijn 45ste verjaardag. En de champagne zal allicht rijkelijk vloeien want ondertussen is Schoenaerts aan een onstuitbare internationale carrière begonnen.

Het filmdebuut van Schoenaerts kwam er al in 1993 in de voor een Oscar genomineerde film Daens van regisseur Stijn Coninx. De toen 15-jarige acteur speelde de rol van Wannes Scholliers. Daarvóór had hij reeds met zijn vader Julien Schoenaerts op de planken gestaan met “Le petit prince”.
Na kleinere rolletjes in televisieseries als Stille Waters en Flikken in 2001 verscheen hij een jaar later in Meisje, het regiedebuut van Dorothée Van Den Berghe. Hiermee werd hij in 2003 benoemd tot “Shooting Star” voor België op het filmfestival van Berlijn.
In 2003 vertolkte Schoenaerts de rol van Chouki in Any Way the Wind Blows, het filmdebuut van Tom Barman.
Schoenaerts, die nog steeds met toneel bezig was, verscheen in meerdere kortfilms onder andere Message from outer space. Uiteindelijk was het wachten tot 2004 alvorens hij weer een hoofdrol kreeg in een langspeelfilm. In Ellektra van regisseur Rudolf Mestdagh kroop hij in de huid van Cosmonaut X, een dj die doof wordt.
In 2006, zo’n twee jaar na z’n laatste langspeelfilm, trok Schoenaerts naar Nederland. Daar werkte hij samen met Paul Verhoeven voor Zwartboek, een film over de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In hetzelfde jaar was Schoenaerts ook te zien in Dennis van Rita, waarin hij Dennis speelde. Later speelde hij Cornee in de Belgisch-Nederlandse productie Nadine en de hoofdrol in de Franstalige kortfilm Retour van Nicolas Bruyelle. Deze korte film werd bekroond tot beste Belgische korte film op het filmfestival van Namen.
In 2007 speelde hij de jonge schrijver, een hoofdrol in de Nederlandse productie De Muze van Ben van Lieshout.
In het voorjaar van 2008 kwam Linkeroever in de bioscoop. Schoenaerts vertolkte de rol van protagonist Bob. De film won de Zilveren Méliès op het Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival.
In het najaar verscheen de nieuwste film van Erik Van Looy en Bart De Pauw: Loft. Hierin speelt hij Filip Willems, één van de vijf hoofdpersonages. In de kortfilm Tunnelrat van de één-reeks De Smaak van De Keyser speelde hij Alfred. Voor deze rol ontving hij in 2009 de televisiester voor beste acteur en werd hij ook genomineerd voor beste acteur op het internationaal televisiefestival van Monte-Carlo. In hetzelfde jaar won hij de Humo’s Pop Poll voor beste Belgische acteur.
In 2009 speelde Schoenaerts in My Queen Karo, de tweede langspeelfilm van Dorothée Van Den Berghe.
In 2011 verschenen Pulsar van Alex Stockman en Rundskop van Michaël R.Roskam met in beide films Schoenaerts in de hoofdrol. Pulsar won de prijs van de filmkritiek op het Filmfest Hamburg in Hamburg. Rundskop werd geselecteerd voor het filmfestival van Berlijn. Schoenaerts kweekte hiervoor 27 kilo spiermassa om de rol van louche vetmester te spelen. De film verzamelde in totaal 31 prijzen op diverse internationale filmfestivals. Bovendien werd de film genomineerd voor de Oscar voor beste buitenlandse film.
Op 16 mei 2011 geraakte bekend dat Schoenaerts zou meespelen in de Amerikaanse remake van Loft. Eerder speelde hij hetzelfde personage (Filip) in de originele versie. De regisseur was opnieuw Erik Van Looy.
Op 5 september 2012 speelde Schoenaerts een hoofdrol in De rouille et d’os van regisseur Jacques Audiard, naast Marion Cotillard. Op het Filmfestival van Cannes ging op 20 mei 2013 de film Blood Ties in première, waarin Schoenaerts opnieuw naast Cotillard te zien was.
In 2014 followed “The drop”, the third film collaboration between director Michaël R.Roskam and actor Matthias Schoenaerts, the previous were The One Thing to Do (2005) and Rundskop (2011). They also worked together in Le Fidèle (2017). It was Michaël R.Roskam’s English-language directorial debut. Because none of the actors are from New York, the filmmakers brought in dialect coach Jerome Butler to create a cohesive accent, which was then customized for each character. “Tom Hardy is a native English speaker, so I asked him to play a straight Brooklyn accent,” says Michaël R.Roskam. “Noomi Rapace is Swedish and I didn’t mind if she had a slightly different accent. Her character might have come here at 12 or 18 and could still retain a little touch of something else, but she speaks good English. The differences are very credible and very close to the Brooklyn reality. And then there is Matthias who likes to play those Brooklyn accents. He just loves doing it and he’s actually really good at it, as well.” While shooting the movie, Matthias Schoenaerts gave Noomi Rapace the script of Alive Alone, a film in which they would play a couple, but Schoenaerts dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
In A Little Chaos uit datzelfde jaar is de acteur te zien samen met Kate Winslet. In dit kostuumdrama ontwerpen beiden een fontein voor de tuinen van Versailles. In Suite française (2014) is hij te zien met Michelle Williams. The movie is based on Irène Némirovsky’s unfinished book “Suite Française” and focuses on the novel “Dolce”. The book was only found after Némirovsky’s death at a concentration camp in Auschwitz in 1942. Her elder daughter, Denise Epstein, kept the notebook containing the manuscript of Suite Française for fifty years without reading it, believing that it would indeed be a journal or diary too painful to read. In the late 1990s, however, having made arrangements to donate her mother’s papers to a French archive, Denise decided to examine the notebook first. At last discovering what it contained, she instead had it published in France, where it became a bestseller in 2004. Irène Némirovsky’s daughter, Denise Epstein, died on April 28, 2013, two months before filming began. There’s a dedication to her in the film’s closing credits.
Initially, Matthias Schoenaerts didn’t want to accept the role of a Nazi officer because he had moral issues with the character, but he changed his mind after he read the book in which the film is based on and thought, “if the writer loves the character so much, then I have to allow myself to love him as well”.
Alexandre Desplat, who was the composer of other three films starring Matthias Schoenaerts (De rouille et d’os uit 2012, The Danish Girl uit 2015 and Kursk uit 2018), was originally attached to compose the film’s musical score. Director Saul Dibb wanted Bruno’s piano piece to be composed before shooting began, and he wanted it to be played during the film as “a developing theme” and then at the end in its full form. Desplat wrote “Bruno’s Theme”, Matthias Schoenaerts played the piano when he was a kid, so he had a little basis, but he wanted to learn how to play for real in the film. However, Desplat was unable to write the final score for the entire film and was replaced by Rael Jones.
Then came Far from the madding crowd. Director Thomas Vinterberg claims that when first reading the book by Thomas Hardy, he knew by the tenth page that Carey Mulligan was his only choice for Bathsheba Everdene. And Carey Mulligan suggested Matthias Schoenaerts for the role of Gabriel Oak after having seen him in De rouille et d’os: “The minute I saw Rust and Bone I called Thomas Vinterberg and I was like, ‘That’s who I want!’. He’s brilliant – one of those effortlessly manly actors”. Far from the madding crowd (*) is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. Asked who she would have chosen if she had these three very different suitors in real life, Carey Mulligan chuckled as she quickly replied, “I probably would have gone for the guy with the baby lamb (Gabriel) in the first 20 minutes of the film.” Matthias Schoenaerts was the only non-British in the cast. Matthias dubbed himself in the French version of the film.

(*) Thomas Hardy took the book’s title from a line in Thomas Gray’s 1751 poem “Elegy written in a Country Churchyard”: “Far from the madding crowd’s ignoble strife, / Their sober wishes never learn’d to stray; / Along the cool sequester’d vale of life / They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.” Het grappige is dat een andere mr.Grey aan het meisje dat hem komt interviewen vraagt welke auteur haar heeft verleid om Engelse literatuur te gaan studeren. Het antwoord blijkt Thomas Hardy te zijn. En, effectief, Matthias Schoenaerts was eventually approached for the role of Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey”, but he told that he fell asleep while reading the script and his agent told him to stay out of it.
