Op 6 maart 1957 krijgt Ghana als eerste land in zwart Afrika de onafhankelijkheid van de Britten.
Bij het begin van de voetbalcompetitie is Léon “Trouet” Mokuna bij La Gantoise de eerste zwarte Afrikaanse speler in België. “Ik had een hard schot. Trouet verwijst naar ‘trou’ – ooit heb ik een bal dwars door het net getrapt. Ik liep in het toenmalige Léopoldville school bij de paters Scheutisten en deed niets anders dan voetballen. In de jaren vijftig kreeg de stad bezoek van Beerschot en Sporting Lissabon. Ik scoorde vier keer tegen Beerschot, toen met de legendes Coppens en Huysmans, en twee keer tegen Lissabon. Mijn naam was gemaakt. Sporting Lissabon vroeg of ik voor hen wou komen spelen. Zo kwam ik in 1953 in Portugal terecht. In 1957 ben ik getransfereerd naar Gent. De tribunes zaten vol. Van overal kwamen mensen naar het Ottenstadium om dat ‘fenomeen’ te zien: een zwarte voetballer. (lacht) Ik werd twee keer topscorer van de Gantoise. Na 1961 heb ik nog voor SV Waregem gespeeld en ik ben ook een paar keer geselecteerd voor de Belgische nationale ploeg. Daar ben ik trots op. Ik ben een echte Gentenaar. In Brussel of Luik voel ik me een vreemdeling. Maar als de trein Aalst voorbij rijdt en Gent nadert, voel ik me thuiskomen. Gent en België hebben me met open armen ontvangen. On 3rd September, the governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, used the National Guard to stop black children from attending the local high school in Little Rock. Woodrow Mann, the reforming mayor of the city, disagreed with this decision and on 4th September telegraphed President Dwight Eisenhower and asked him to send federal troops to Little Rock. On 24th September, President Dwight Eisenhower, went on television and told the American people: “At a time when we face grave situations abroad because of the hatred that communism bears towards a system of government based on human rights, it would be difficult to exaggerate the harm that is being done to the prestige and influence and indeed to the safety of our nation and the world. Our enemies are gloating over this incident and using it everywhere to misrepresent our whole nation. We are portrayed as a violator of those standards which the peoples of the world united to proclaim in the Charter of the United Nations.” After trying for eighteen days to persuade Orval Faubus to obey the ruling of the Supreme Court, Eisenhower decided to order paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division, to protect black children going to Little Rock Central High School. The white population of Little Rock were furious that they were being forced to integrate their school and Faubus described the federal troops as an army of occupation. Elizabeth Eckford and the other eight African American students that entered the school (Carlotta Walls, Jefferson Thomas, Thelma Mothershed, Melba Pattillo, Ernest Green, Terrance Roberts, Gloria Ray and Minnijean Brown) suffered physical violence and constant racial abuse. Parents of four of the children lost their jobs because they had insisted in sending them to a white school. Woodrow Mann and his family received death threats and Klu Klux Klan crosses were burnt on his front lawn. The federal troops left at the end of November. Ondertussen is op 1 juni in Gent de eerste computer in ons land in gebruik genomen. Zijn geheugen bedraagt zo’n tweeduizend woorden… Een dag later rijdt de eerste TEE (Trans Europe Express) door Europa, een initiatief van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Op 18 augustus gaat Hugo Claus samen met Cees Nooteboom naar het wereldkampioenschap wielrennen in Waregem kijken. Rik Van Steenbergen wint vóór de Fransen Louison Bobet en André Darrigade. Rik Van Looy wordt ontgoocheld vierde, omdat Fred De Bruyne (vijfde) de sprint aantrok voor Rik I in plaats van voor Rik II. Op 18 september wordt de spoorlijn Brussel-Antwerpen-Amsterdam geëlectrificeerd. Op 28 september opent koning Boudewijn de kleine ring rond Brussel. Op 4 oktober lanceren de Sovjets de eerste Spoetnik, op 3 november gevolgd door Spoetnik II met het hondje Laika aan boord. De 21-jarige Yves Saint Laurent volgt Christian Dior op, die is overleden op 24 oktober.
