Vandaag is het al twintig jaar geleden dat de Engelse cultauteur Douglas Adams is overleden.
Douglas Adams werd geboren in Cambridge en studeerde daar ook op St. Johns College, waar hij zonder succes bij de bekende studententheatergroep Footlights, broedplaats van televisietalent, probeerde te komen. Hij werd dan maar een man van twaalf stielen en dertien ongelukken. Zo was hij o.m. ziekenhuisbode, schoonmaker, lijfwacht, radioproducent en scriptredacteur van Doctor Who (drie afleveringen staan op zijn naam). Ook heeft hij met Graham Chapman van Monty Python samengewerkt en wordt in de credits van een van de afleveringen daarvan vermeld. (*)
Hij is zoals gezegd doorgebroken met The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in het Nederlands uitgekomen als Het Transgalactisch Liftershandboek, which started life in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy before developing into a “trilogy” of five books that sold over 15 million copies in his lifetime, a television series, several stage plays, comics, a computer game, and in 2005 a feature film.
In between Adams’s first trip to Madagascar with Mark Carwardine in 1985, and their series of travels that formed the basis for the radio series and non-fiction book Last Chance to See, Adams wrote two other novels with a new cast of characters. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was first published in 1987, and was described by its author as “a kind of ghost-horror-detective-time-travel-romantic-comedy-epic, mainly concerned with mud, music and quantum mechanics.”
Adams had de reputatie erg moeilijk een boek af te kunnen maken. Misschien dat daarom zijn boeken vrij veel bewerkingen en referenties naar eerder werk bevatten. Adams op zijn best kenmerkt zich – nog altijd volgens Wikipedia – door een levendige stijl met vele onverwachte wendingen, absurde plots, subtiele satire met name op de Californische hippie-levensstijl, en een totale minachting voor de logica en fysica van het dagelijks leven. Adams-fans hebben een heel jargon aan zijn boeken ontleend.
Hij was sinds 1991 getrouwd met de advocate Jane Belson en had een dochter Polly (geboren in 1994). In 1999 the family moved from London to Santa Barbara, California, where they lived until his death op 49-jarige leeftijd aan een hartaanval tijdens een work-out in een sportschool in Santa Barbara. Sinds zijn dood is er elk jaar op 25 mei (en dus niet op 11 mei, zijn échte sterfdag) Towel Day, welke een directe hommage is aan de Guide. Op deze dag is het de bedoeling dat men de gehele dag met een handdoek binnen handbereik rondloopt. (Ik zou hier iets kunnen verzinnen i.v.m. Robbe de Hert, maar die had bij mijn weten al een handdoek bij de hand toen Adams nog ziekenhuisbode was.)
In May 2002 The Salmon of Doubt was published, containing many short stories, essays, and letters. It also includes eleven chapters of his long-awaited but unfinished novel, The Salmon of Doubt, which was originally intended to become a new Dirk Gently novel, but might have later become the sixth Hitchhiker novel.
A 12-part radio series based on the Dirk Gently novels was announced in 2007, with annual transmissions starting in October of that year. BBC Radio 4 also commissioned a third Dirk Gently radio series based on the incomplete chapters of The Salmon of Doubt, and written by Kim Fuller; however, this has eventually been dropped in favour of a BBC TV series based on the two completed novels.
A sixth Hitchhiker novel, And Another Thing… by Eoin Colfer, was released on 12 October 2009 (the 30th anniversary of the first book), published with the full support of Adams’s estate.
During his lifetime (evidently) Adams played the guitar left-handed and had a collection of twenty-four left-handed guitars when he died in 2001 (having received his first guitar in 1964). He also studied piano in the 1960s with the same teacher as Paul Wickens, the pianist who plays in Paul McCartney’s band (and composed the music for the 2004–2005 editions of the Hitchhiker’s Guide radio series).
Douglas Adams was bevriend met David Gilmour (gitarist van Pink Floyd). On the occasion of Adams’s 42nd birthday (the number 42 having special significance, being the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything and also Adams’s age when his daughter Polly was born), he was invited to make a guest appearance at Pink Floyd’s 28 October 1994 concert at Earls Court in London, playing guitar on the songs “Brain Damage” and “Eclipse”. Adams chose the name for Pink Floyd’s 1994 album, The Division Bell, by picking the words from the lyrics to one of its tracks, namely “High Hopes”. Gilmour also performed at Adams’s memorial service following his death in 2001 (**).
Douglas Adams was also a friend of Gary Brooker, the lead singer, pianist and songwriter of Procol Harum. Adams is known to have invited Brooker to one of the many parties that Adams held at his house. On one such occasion Gary Brooker performed the full (4 verse) version of his hit song “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. Brooker also performed at Adams’s memorial service. Adams also appeared on stage with Brooker to perform “In Held Twas in I” at Redhill when the band’s lyricist Keith Reid was not available. On several other occasions he had been known to introduce Procol Harum at their gigs. (Wikipedia)
Adams was verder sinds zijn jeugd een groot fan van The Beatles en vergeleek Oasis met The Rutles.
Nog niet zo lang geleden heb ik “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” (1987) proberen lezen. Dat was de tweede keer dat ik een poging deed om te doorgronden waarom Adams zo ontzettend populair is. Mijn eerste poging betrof zijn fameuze “Hitchhiker’s guide through the Galaxy”, waarmee hij in 1979 is gedebuteerd en meteen doorgebroken. Ik heb dat toen nog voor halfweg weggelegd en ook Dirk Gently is dezelfde weg opgegaan. Ik heb gewoon niets, maar dan ook niets met absurde humor. Ik kan er niet mee lachen (toch de primaire bedoeling, dacht ik zo) en voor de rest vind ik het dan puur tijdverlies. Kijk, ik ben wellicht vreselijk ouderwets, maar ik vind dat als ik tijd investeer in iets om te lezen, dan wil ik daar ook iets voor “terugkrijgen”. En ja, eens goed lachen hoort daarbij. Maar indien niet, dan wil ik er op de een of andere manier toch graag iets van opsteken. Luister, mijn vorige boek “Het grote spel” van Claude Cueni vond ik zeker geen meesterwerk, maar ik heb erdoor toch iets bijgeleerd over het bankenstelsel, de staatsfinanciën en de hygiëne rond 1700. Naar dit laatste had ik niet echt gevraagd, maar kom, alles bij elkaar leg je dat boek dan toch met een voldaan gevoel weg. En dat heb ik dus totaal niet bij Douglas Adams, ik vind het puur tijdverlies.

(*) Wat heel uitzonderlijk is. Buiten Adams viel enkel Neil Innes die eer te beurt. In tegenstelling tot Innes heeft Adams verder niet zo heel veel te maken met de Pythons. Hij treedt een paar keer op als figurant in de serie en hij werkte ook mee aan “The Holy Grail”. Zijn boek “The meaning of liff” (1983) daarentegen heeft niks maar dan ook helemaal niks te maken met “The meaning of life” van Monty Python.
