Jennifer Jason Leigh werd geboren op 5 februari 1962 in Los Angeles, jawel, want ze was de dochter van acteur Vic Morrow, die in 1982 op de set van “Twilight Zone” werd onthoofd door een helicopter (*). Op de koop toe liet hij haar amper 78,18 dollar na, terwijl haar zus Carrie Ann op 600.000 dollar kon rekenen.
Jennifer, die al in 1971 was gedebuteerd in “Death of a stranger”, liet het niet aan haar hart komen en stortte zich vol vuur op het acteerwerk. Zodanig zelfs dat ze in haar rol als anorexia-patiënte in “The best little girl in the world” (1981) zo erg opging dat ze amper nog 39 kilo woog!
In 1985 speelde ze een stomende sex-scène met Rutger Hauer in “Flesh+Blood” (bovenstaande foto), die ze een jaar later opnieuw tegenkwam in “The hitcher”. Een ander opgemerkt optreden was in “Last exit to Brooklyn” in 1989. In 1991 moet ik haar gezien hebben in “Backdraft”, maar eerlijk gezegd, ik herinner me haar acteerprestatie niet. Een jaar later was ze wél opvallend in “Single white female”. En ook in “Short cuts” (1993) van Robert Altman, waarin ze een telefoonsex-arbeidster speelde. Waarom Altman op die manier haar aan zijn protégé Alan Rudolph voorstelde om de schrijfster Dorothy Parker te spelen, vraagt ze zichzelf af. Het was zeker niet door “The hudsucker proxy” waarin ze wél een dergelijk personage speelde, want die was toen nog niet uitgekomen.
In 1994 was ze dus op het Festival van Cannes vertegenwoordigd met twee films: “The hudsucker proxy” van het regisseursduo Ethan en Joel Coen (“Barton Fink”), een film over het beurswereldje, waarin ze te zien is naast Tim Robbins (“The Player”) en daarnaast als de controversiële schrijfster Dorothy Parker in “Mrs.Parker and the vicious circle” van Alan Rudolph (zie onderstaande foto).
Dit is een zeer knappe film over de tijd dat de Amerikanen nog zinnen konden uitspreken met woorden van meer dan drie lettergrepen. Ik hou wel van sommige erotische films, maar in andere films vind ik dat men de bedscènes beter kort kan houden. En hier word ik op mijn wenken bediend. Het enige spijtige is dat Leigh helemaal niet veroudert, ook al moet ze op het einde een door de alcohol afgetakelde dame spelen. Volgens Sylvia Kristel, die dezelfde manager heeft als Jennifer en haar daardoor persoonlijk kent, is deze fout ongetwijfeld toe te schrijven aan regisseur Alan Rudolph en niet aan Jennifer zelf, die b.v. niet zou kunnen verdragen dat ze er lelijk moet uitzien.
Jennifer Jason Leigh was later op het jaar te zien in “Dolores Claiborne” van Taylor Hackford. Ze speelt daarin de dochter van Kathy Bates, waarvan ze (net als detective Christopher Plummer) vermoedt dat die haar vader (een sadistische dronkelap) heeft vermoord. Bates werd vrijgesproken, maar de zaak wordt opnieuw opgerakeld als de vrouw, bij wie Bates als gezelschapsdame werkte, wordt vermoord en al haar bezittingen aan Bates nalaat. Dit verhaal van Stephen King is toch eerder een melodrama dan een thriller. Heel de film lang wordt Jennifer Jason Leigh een beetje “weggespeeld” door een schitterende Kathy Bates, maar ze krijgt haar revanche op het einde, waarin Bates – een beetje ongelukkig eigenlijk – geen dialoog meer krijgt toegekend en Jennifer het finale duel aangaat met een (eveneens grandioze) Christopher Plummer.
Nog later kwam “Georgia” van Ulu Grosbard uit, waarin Leigh met Mare Winningham twee zingende zusteren uitbeeldt. Let op: het is géén duo. Integendeel: ze bekampen elkaar, de succesvolle countryzangeres (Mare Winningham) en de mislukte pubrockzangeres (Leigh). En alsof dat al geen ramp op zich is, zingen ze ook écht. Leigh ligt zelf aan de oorsprong van het verhaal(tje) en liet het door haar moeder (Barbara Turner) uitschrijven.
In 2015 is ze helemaal onherkenbaar in “The hateful eight” van Quentin Tarantino. Quentin Tarantino: “Daisy became one of the most interesting characters. It had to be an actress I could trust, and also a performer you enjoy watching her character work. When Jennifer came in, she was very impressive in the reading, but what really got me, was I’d just started watching a bunch of her movies. I had a whole Jennifer Jason Leigh film festival. I watched one, and I couldn’t wait to put the next one in, she was such an entertaining actress, especially about that time in the 90s, like eXistenZ (1999), Georgia (1995), and especially Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994). Those movies were built around her. Her performance was the center of the movie, and everything was built around that, and that’s what was needed for Daisy.”
Ze zingt hierin zowaar ook een ballade. The guitar that Daisy Domergue plays while singing the Australian folk song called “Jim Jones at Botany Bay” was a priceless antique from the 1870s, on loan from the Martin Guitar Museum. At the end of the song, the script called for John Ruth (Kurt Russell) to grab the guitar, and smash it to pieces. Six replicas were built for the shoot, and were supposed to be substituted for the real instrument for the smashing shot, but due to a miscommunication, Kurt Russell was not informed, and destroyed the original guitar before anyone could stop him. Jennifer Jason Leigh’s shocked reaction to this is genuine and can be seen in the released film. The Martin Guitar Museum subsequently announced they would never loan guitars to film shoots again.
Zelf zou ik de film de titel “The Lincoln Letter” meegegeven hebben, aangezien “The hateful eight” ter discussie staat. Despite the film’s title and marketing, there are actually nine characters that share the cabin during the blizzard. Absent from the list of eight characters in the film’s marketing is O.B., the wagon driver (James Parks). There are ten, if you count Channing Tatum’s character Jody, who is hiding under the floorboards. Tatum’s character wasn’t in any of the marketing trailers, because Tarantino wanted to keep it a secret.
On the other hand, in the script’s first draft, which was leaked, the Abraham Lincoln letter is only brought up once in the stagecoach, and is never mentioned again. In the two subsequent drafts that would follow, the letter became bigger and bigger, ending up in the final version, where the closing lines are about it…

(*) The comedy “Trading places” was filmed immediately after the Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) accident, when Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed when a helicopter crashed during production. John Landis was later tried and acquitted of manslaughter, the first time in history that a Hollywood director was charged for a death which had occurred on-set.
