In 1930, dus op het hoogtepunt van zijn roem, publiceerde Somerset Maugham alweer een sleutelroman: “Cakes and ale”. De titel is een uitdrukking: “Cakes and ale” is synoniem voor “the good life”. De origine van de uitdrukking gaat terug op Shakespeares “Twelfth Night”. Aan het woord is Sir Toby Belch: “Out o’ tune, sir: ye lie. Art any more than a steward? Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?”
