Vandaag is het al twintig jaar geleden dat de Amerikaanse country-zanger Johnny Cash is overleden.
Ik heb een tijdje nagedacht wat ik over Johnny Cash zou kunnen schrijven, maar uiteindelijk heb ik besloten het maar zo te laten. Ik luister veel naar opnames van Johnny Cash, maar ik vind dat er aan de persoon zelf een duister kantje is. Ik weet wel dat je songteksten als “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die” niet letterlijk moet nemen, maar ik vind het toch ook niet erg gepast om zo’n songs dan in een gevangenis te gaan zingen en daar een groot applaus voor te krijgen… Enfin, wie wat wil lezen over country music in het algemeen of over Cash zijn debuut bij Sun Records of over zijn huwelijk met June Carter moet maar op de respectievelijke link klikken.

P.S. Over de iconische foto hierboven kan ik het volgende zeggen: “A crew from Granada Television in the UK filmed the concert at San Quentin for broadcast on television. In the extended version of the concert released by Columbia/Legacy in 2000, Cash is heard expressing frustration at being told what to sing and where to stand prior to his performance of I Walk the Line. The famous image of an angry-looking Cash giving the middle finger gesture to a camera originates from the performance; in his liner notes for the 2000 reissue, Cash explains that he was frustrated at having Granada’s film crew blocking his view of the audience.
