Vandaag is het 55 jaar geleden dat Paul McCartney Linda Eastman heeft ontmoet tijdens een optreden Georgie Fame in The Bag O’Nails Club in Soho, waar Paul zijn eigen tafel had. Aan de muur hangt nu een gedenkplaat…
Op The Beatles’ Bible vertelt Paul McCartney: “She was there with the Animals, who she knew from photographing them in New York. The band had finished and they got up to either leave or go for a drink or a pee or something, and she passed our table. I was near the edge and stood up just as she was passing, blocking her exit. I introduced myself, and said, ‘We’re going on to another club after this, would you like to join us?'”
Enfin, eigenlijk blijkt dit (door mij ingekort) citaat uit het boek “Many Years From Now” te komen, geschreven door Barry Miles. Die andere club was de Speakeasy, a club on Margaret Street. Op The Beatles’ Bible vertelt Linda het vervolg van het verhaal: “We flirted a bit, and I remember everybody at the table heard A Whiter Shade Of Pale that night for the first time. That’s when we actually met. Then we went back to his house. We were in the Mini with I think Lulu and Dudley Edwards, who painted Paul’s piano; Paul was giving him a lift home. I was impressed to see his Magrittes.” (ook dit komt uit “Many Years From Now” van Barry Miles). Ik vind de pickup-line van Paul wel heel origineel. Normaal zegt iemand: wil je mijn verzameling postzegels eens zien, maar bij Paul was dat dus blijkbaar een verzameling van schilderijen van René Magritte!
The pair met again four days later, on 19 May 1967, when Eastman attended the press party for Sgt Pepper at Brian Epstein’s house at 24 Chapel Street, London. And the rest, as they say, is history…
