Ik vind dat Wikipedia te veel aandacht besteedt aan onderscheidingen. Mijn afkeer voor het Britse systeem met “Sirs” en “Ladies” en OBE’s en MBE’s en wat weet ik nog allemaal is gekend. Maar ik heb ook een hekel aan het toekennen van allerlei prijzen. Ik geef het toe: voor de Oscars maak ik soms een uitzondering, maar voor de rest, de Golden Globes, de BAFTA’s, de Césars en tutti quanti kunnen voor mij allemaal de boom in. Het doet me te veel denken aan de redenering dat kunst of zelfs nog maar de ontspanningsindustrie in onderscheidingen te vatten is, terwijl Bela Bartok de enige juiste houding had tegenover dit procédé: “Wedstrijden? Dat is voor paarden!” En dus heb ik ook nooit aandacht besteed aan de Grammy Awards, ook al omdat die in The Simpsons altijd belachelijk worden gemaakt (het niet winnen van een Grammy lijkt er moeilijker dan het wél winnen). Maar voor de allereerste uitreiking van de Grammy Awards wil ik nu wel eens een uitzondering maken.
The 1st Annual Grammy Awards were held on May 4, 1959. They recognized musical accomplishments by performers for the year 1958. Two separate ceremonies were held simultaneously on the same day; the first in The Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and the second in the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City. Ella Fitzgerald (hierboven in a battle of the bosoms met Billie Holiday) & Ross Bagdasarian (who the hell is Ross Badgasarian?) won most awards with 3 each, whereas Count Basie, Domenico Modugno, Henry Mancini, and each won 2 awards.
