245 jaar geleden: 32ste symfonie van Mozart

Op 26 april 1779 voltooit Mozart in Salzburg zijn 32ste symfonie (KV.318). Het is zijn eerste symfonie na zijn mislukte reis naar Parijs. Aangezien het werk veel weg heeft van een ouverture van de Parijse opéra comique zoals van Grétry, heeft men een tijdlang gedacht dat dit de ouverture tot “Thamos” of “Zaide” moet geweest zijn, maar dat is niet zo (ze is in G, terwijl althans voor “Zaide” D logischer zou zijn geweest). Het is wél waar dat het voor het theatergezelschap van Johann Heinrich Böhm was bedoeld, die ook “Thamos” en een Duitse versie van “La finta giardiniera” hebben opgevoerd. Deze groep verbleef op dat moment weliswaar in Augsburg, maar het was Mozarts nichtje Maria Anna Thekla (“Bäsle”) die voor de correspondentie instond. Samen met twee aria’s leende hij deze symfonie dus uit voor de opera buffa “La villanella rapita” van Francesco Bianchi (tekening via Albin R.Burt van Wikipedia). Trompetten en pauken werden pas toegevoegd voor een latere opvoering in 1785.

Giuseppe Francesco Bianchi (1752-1810) was an Italian opera composer. Born at Cremona, Lombardy, he studied with Pasquale Cafaro and Niccolò Jommelli, and worked mainly in London, Paris and in all the major Italian operatic centres of Venice, Naples, Rome, Milan, Turin, Florence.
He wrote at least 78 operas of all genres, mainly in the field of the Italian opera, but in the French opera too. These included the drammi per musica (opera seria) “Castore e Polluce” (Florence 1779), “Arbace and Zemira” (both Naples, 1781), “Alonso e Cora” (Venice, 1786), “Calto and La morte di Cesare” (both Venice, 1788), and “Seleuco, re di Siria” (Venice, 1791), and the opera giocosa “La villanella rapita” (Süttör, 1784).
Bianchi committed suicide in Hammersmith, London, in 1810, probably out of family troubles (the loss of his five-year-old sole daughter, occurred on 28 June 1807, was heavy on the musician’s heart).
