Vandaag is het zestig jaar geleden dat in de tekenfilmserie “The Flintstone” Pebbles, de roodharige dochter van Fred en Wilma Flintstone, werd geboren at the Bedrock Rockapedic Hospital.
In 1963, when Hanna-Barbera decided to add a baby to the show, their first choice was a boy. When Ideal Toy Company heard this, company executives approached Hanna-Barbera with a proposal to change the baby character to a girl for which the toymaker could create a doll, and Hanna-Barbera agreed.
Pebbles was born near the end of the third season. De naam Pebbles was eigenlijk wel een leuke vondst als dochter van Fred Flintstone (Vuursteen), want het betekent eigenlijk “kiezelsteentjes”. Infant Pebbles was voiced by Jean Vander Pyl, who also voiced her mother, Wilma. Bij ons is ze natuurlijk vooral bekend omdat ze haar naam heeft gegeven aan misschien wel de beste rockgroep die Vlaanderen ooit heeft gekend. Ze noemden zich oorspronkelijk The Fredstones, maar toen ze in 1965 in contact kwamen met producer Norman Petty (destijds de producer van Buddy Holly) stonden ze dicht bij een internationale doorbraak en Petty wist de groep te overreden om de naam van de groep te veranderen in The Pebbles.
Pebbles is most famous in her infant form on The Flintstones, but has also appeared at various other ages, including as a teenager on the early 1970s spin-off The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show and as an adult in three made-for-television movies. In die spin-offs is ze door talrijke actrices een stem gegeven, o.m. ook door Sally Struthers uit All in the family.
Pebbles spent most of her time with Bamm-Bamm Rubble, her childhood best friend whom she eventually marries. They eventually had a son named Chip and a daughter named Roxy, who were fraternal twins. [Wikipedia]
