Het is vandaag ook al tien jaar geleden dat de Engelse wielrenner Ray Booty is overleden. Bij ons is hij zo goed als onbekend, maar in Engeland wordt hij “de Bradley Wiggins uit de jaren vijftig” genoemd…
Booty rode for Ericsson Wheelers Cycling Club, a since-disbanded Nottinghamshire cycling club, and the Army Cycling Union. He won the national 100-mile (160 km) time trial championship every year from 1955 to 1959. In 1956 he was the first man to beat four hours in this race. Booty rode a Raleigh bicycle with an 84-inch (2,100 mm) fixed gear to 3h 58m 28s. The second man, future professional Stan Brittain was beaten by 12 minutes. The day before Booty had ridden from Nottingham to the start, which was also 100 miles.
Om u een idee te geven hoe het er destijds in Engeland aan toe ging: het was die dag snikheet en Booty had geen drinken meer en arriveerde totaal uitgedroogd. Maar ook aan de aankomst had niemand eraan gedacht om toch wat drinken te voorzien. Er werd dan maar bij de dichtst bij zijnde woning aangeklopt en daar had men enkel nog melk. En die bleek onder de temperatuur nog zuur te zijn geworden ook. Toch dronk Booty ze naar verluidt in één teug uit!
In September Booty attempted the 100-mile (160 km) record under Road Records Association (RRA) rules. These allowed him to take advantage of tailwinds and gradient drop (time trials in the UK must be on out-and-back courses). He recorded 3h 28m 40s. For the event he used a Sturmey-Archer hub gear. The record stood for 34 years, when it was beaten by Ian Cammish.
Natuurlijk spreken we hier over exploten die niet meer bij het huidige wielrennen passen, maar dat betekent niet dat Booty ook niet succesvol was in “normale” wedstrijden. He won the gold medal in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games road race in Cardiff. He won a bronze medal in the national championship road race in the same year. He also won the Manx International road race in 1954. In 1955 nam hij ook deel aan de Vredeskoers en op het WK voor amateurs in Rome, dat werd gewonnen door thuisrijder Sante Ranucci, werd hij negende. In de top tien vinden we bekende namen als Dino Bruni, Seamus Elliott en Adolf Christian.
Ron Kitching probeert op Wikipedia een antwoord te vinden op de vraag waarom Booty nooit prof is geworden: “What he really needed was to be part of a good continental racing team. Then I think he would have gone to the very top. But whether or not his personality would have got in the way, that’s another thing. You need a bit of modesty and humility to achieve that. I think the fact that Ray dropped right out of the sport proves that his interest didn’t go deep enough.”
