Scott Joplin (1868-1917)

Het zal morgen al 105 jaar geleden zijn dat de pianist en ragtime-componist Scott Joplin is gestorven. Hij was vermoedelijk ook de componist van de eerste opera, geschreven door een Afro-Amerikaan.

Scott Joplin was born into a musical family of railway laborers in Northeast Texas, and developed his musical knowledge with the help of local teachers. Joplin grew up in Texarkana, where he formed a vocal quartet, and taught mandolin and guitar. During the late 1880s he left his job as a laborer with the railroad, and travelled around the American South as an itinerant musician. He went to Chicago for the World’s Fair of 1893, which played a major part in making ragtime a national craze by 1897.
Joplin moved to Sedalia, Missouri, in 1894 and earned a living as a piano teacher. Joplin began publishing music in 1895, and publication of his “Maple Leaf Rag” in 1899 brought him fame. Hij schreef meer dan dertig rags en wordt op die manier als de “uitvinder” beschouwd, al wordt “La Bamboula” van Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) uit 1847 reeds als voorloper genoemd. Ragtime is inderdaad hoegenaamd geen geïmproviseerde muziek en kende daarom b.v. nogal veel bijval in klassieke middens (Dvorak, Satie, Charles Ives).  Er zijn pianolarollen bewaard gebleven, ingespeeld door Scott Joplin zelf.
In 1901 Joplin moved to St. Louis, where he continued to compose and publish music, and regularly performed in the St. Louis community. The score to his first opera A Guest of Honor was confiscated in 1903 with his belongings because of a non-payment of bills, and is now considered lost. He continued to compose and publish music, and in 1907 moved to New York City to find a producer for a new opera. He attempted to go beyond the limitations of the musical form that made him famous, without much monetary success. His second opera, Treemonisha, was not received well in 1915. Er dient wel bij vermeld dat omwille van zijn huidskleur, Joplin niet op de nodige steun kon rekenen zodat de beide premières plaats hadden zonder decors en kostumes en met hemzelf alleen aan de piano.
In 1916 begon Joplin te dementeren als gevolg van syfilis. In januari 1917 werd hij opgenomen in een inrichting waar hij drie maanden later op 49-jarige leeftijd overleed.
De muziek van Scott Joplin geraakte in de vergetelheid, maar kreeg opnieuw bekendheid toen in de film “The Sting” van George Roy Hill (met Robert Redford en Paul Newman) zijn muziek, met name “The Entertainer”, gebruikt werd. His music was rediscovered and returned to popularity in the early 1970s with the release of a million-selling album recorded by Joshua Rifkin.
