155 jaar geleden: “Alice in wonderland” verschijnt

Vandaag is het precies 155 jaar geleden dat het boek “Alice in wonderland” van Lewis Carroll is verschenen.

De Alice uit de titel is eigenlijk Alice Liddell. Dag op dag drie jaar eerder had Lewis Carroll een boottochtje gemaakt, waarbij hij op haar aanstoken een verhaal had verzonnen, dat later de basis van het boek zou vormen. Er is nog een tweede datum die soms als “eerste publicatie” wordt vermeld (26 november 1865). Dat komt omdat de eerste oplage op verzoek van tekenaar John Tenniel, a cartoonist for the magazine ‘Punch’, werd teruggetrokken. The first edition consisted of 2000 copies, but because of Tenniel’s dissatisfaction with the printing of the pictures they were fetched back within a month. All but about 15 to 22 copies were successfully recalled and donated to children’s hospitals and the like. The new ‘first edition’ was published in November 1865 (but dated 1866). By the end of 1866, 5000 copies had been sold.
