“It’s one for the money, two for the show, three to make ready, now go cat go!” We kennen allemaal de beginregels van Carl Perkins’ “Blue suede shoes”, maar heb je je ooit al eens afgevraagd wat ze eigenlijk betekenen?
Vandaag is het precies tachtig jaar geleden dat de musical “Two for the show” in première ging. Het was de opvolger van “One for the money” inderdaad, en “Three to make ready” zou het trio vol maken. Het waren allemaal typische Broadway-producties uit die tijd, wat dus wil zeggen: een afwisseling van komische sketches met gezongen nummers. De schrijvers van de sketchen en de liedjes kon nogal eens wijzigen, maar de producer was voor deze drie shows dezelfde: John Murray Anderson.
In “Two for the show” was het bekendste nummer “How high the moon” van Morgan Lewis, op tekst van Nancy Hamilton. In his review for The New York Times, Brooks Atkinson called the successor to last year’s revue a “very pleasant evening…little in size and breezily acted.” He felt that Nancy Hamilton’s sketches were more clever than entertaining, but were more professional than in the previous revue. He praised Richard Haydn’s “limp mannerisms and gasping speech.” Especially noted was “fresh and antic” Betty Hutton, “who dances like a mad sprite and sings breathlessly as though she enjoys it.” [Wikipedia]
