Vandaag is het 285 jaar geleden dat de eerste opera op Amerikaanse bodem werd uitgevoerd. Dat was in Charleston in het huidige South-Carolina en de titel van de opera was “Flora”.
Zoals gewoonlijk baseer ik me hiervoor op On this day, maar evenzeer zoals gewoonlijk vertelt men daar niks meer daarover. Dit voorval wordt op vele sites op het internet overgenomen, maar niemand lijkt zich te bekommeren over welke opera het dan wel mag gegaan zijn. Alleen ene Bruce Scott op NPR-World of Opera weet te vertellen: “The version of Flora produced in Charleston was resurrected by American composer Neely Bruce, who took the original song tunes and music from two surviving scores, and wove it all together with music of his own — recreating a world of bawdy comedy, often riotous stage action and truly charming music.”
Hij situeert “Flora” als zogenaamde “ballad opera” (“Ballad opera took things a step further, with the songs playing a pivotal role in telling the story. The genre’s London popularity only lasted a decade or so, yet English ballad opera went on to influence everything from the singspiel in Germany to comic opera in France to the Broadway musical”), maar nog altijd hebben we er het raden naar wie dan wel de oorspronkelijke componist mag zijn geweest.
Daarom ga ik er maar van uit dat het over deze opera gaat: La Flora, o vero Il natal de’ fiori (Flora, or The Birth of Flowers) is an opera in a prologue and five acts composed by Marco da Gagliano and Jacopo Peri to a libretto by Andrea Salvadori. It was first performed on 14 October 1628 at the Teatro Mediceo in Florence to celebrate the marriage of Margherita de’ Medici and Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma. Based on the story of Chloris and Zephyrus in Book V of Ovid‘s Fasti, Salvadori’s libretto contains many allegorical references to the transfer of political power, the beauty of Tuscany, and the strength of the Medici dynasty. The score of La Flora is one of only two still in existence out of Gagliano’s 14 published stage works. Several of its arias are still performed as concert pieces. (Wikipedia)
