Johan Schmidt, de Belgische pianist die 4de eindigde in de Elisabethwedstrijd 1987, won the Maria Callas Competition in Athens, and was prized at the Tchaikovsky (1990, 3rd prize) and Van Cliburn (1993, 4th prize) competitions. In addition, he was awarded the Leonardo da Vinci Prize from the Rotary International. Schmidt has performed internationally, both as a concert pianist and a chamber musician. Ik zag en hoorde hem aan het werk tijdens de 2de nacht van Radio 3 in De Singel (in 1991) met o.a. “Verhalen van de oude grootmoeder” van Prokofiev.
